I have an old joystick, pre 1999, will a new one fit?

Strictly speaking no! although an upgrade path is available.  We can supply a new 4 lead wiring harness and relay to replace the old 3 lead for your pre 1999 bowthruster and a new 4 core loom and joystick which will upgrade your bowthruster with the updated IPC control system.

Do I need to change my anode each year?

The wear rate of your anode is very much dependant on the waters you are in and other boats/structures around you.  Sleipner Side-Power anodes are designed to last a season in most applications.  We would recommend fitting new anodes every season, purely on the basis that the anodes cost a few pounds when the gearleg they are protecting will costs hundreds to replace!

How do I know if my boat needs a tunnel thruster or an external one?

Pod type thrusters are much easier to fit than conventional tunnel thrusters and offer performance advantages. Due to the depth of water that the thruster is under it is usually mounted further forward to provide better leverage.  In certain craft (very shallow forefoot) this is the only option accepting a retractable thruster.  Despite the installation costs of a conventional tunnel thruster, they still represent very good value for money, this is why the vast majority of bowthrusters are tunnel thrusters.

What is the warranty on your product?

Sleipner thrusters carry a 2 year, fully transferable international warranty.  (Please refer to warranty statement in the installation manual).

My thruster feels underpowered, is there anything I can do?

Over the years, the expectation of thruster performance has grown along with the development of more and more thruster models.  Into each size of thruster tunnel, we can supply 2 or 3 different motors, each with a different power of thrust. Please contact us with information about your thruster and we would be delighted to offer you the options available.

My boat is made of wood can I have a bowthruster?

Bowthrusters have been successfully installed in many wooden boats. The tunnels can be bonded in with epoxy resin or steel tunnels fabricated to suit.  Please contact us for advice and further details.

How long can I run my bowthruster for before it burns out?

All Sleipner Side-power thrusters will run for 3 minutes continuously (in one burst) dependent on the electrical system supplying them with power.  Motors ‘burning out’ is a thing of the past thanks to the IPC system and other innovations

I have a Catamaran, do I need 2 bowthrusters?

No!  The best installation would have a thruster in each hull.  However in practice most Catamarans can have one thruster in one hull and work very well for the owner, albeit with a little more power in one direction than the other!
